Brunswick Community History Group was created more than twenty one years ago when a group of history enthusiasts met at Brunswick's Mechanics' Institute. Over the decades, people have changed and times and new venues have been sought but a love and passion for local history has remained the defining characteristic of the group.

History of Brunswick
Surveyor, Robert Hoddle, surveyed and marked out what was destined to become Brunswick. He drew two straight lines, which later became Park Street and Moreland Road, from the Moonee Ponds and Merri Creeks. Halfway between the creeks a line running north to south was marked. Initially, the road was known as Pentridge Road but was later changed to Sydney Road in 1859. The area was then divided into farms.

Brunswick's House of Stoush
In 1931 the Lyric Theatre came back to life as the Brunswick Stadium. This was brought about by the Depression where fighting for small purses helped a family survive

The Orange Order

 In the late nineteenth century, the English and Scots had erected churches for worship in Brunswick. Catholics, however, were forced to attend services in Coburg or Elizabeth Street's St Franics, a trying and long excursion, especially on the deplorable Sydney Road. The depression of the 1890s inflamed simmering sectarian sentiments between the Protestants and Catholics as many members of the Methodist and Presbyterian churches believed that the Catholics were getting all the jobs and pushing the Protestants out. The Local Orange Lodge decided it was time to stop this.

Early Industry of Brunswick

Brunswick was created in the late 1830s, with its boundries extending from the Moonee Ponds Creek to the Merri Creek. With the discovery of clay and bluestone deposits, Brunswick developed into a thriving business centre, with clay pits and quarries dotting the municipality.
